    Tancred - Nightstand (Polyvinyl)

Jess Abbott, formerly of Now, Now, began recording under the name Tancred back in 2011 but really got on our radar at Y-Not two years ago with her excellent third album Out of the Garden. Now she's back with the follow-up, Nightstand, combining the punchy textures of her last record with a slightly more introspective mood.

Nightstand is full of rocking, catching guitar-led tracks once again, but alternates with some quieter moments. The jangle-pop of "Queen of New York" is up there with her best songs, capturing the rush of emotion following a one-night-stand in NYC. Abbott's eye for detail in her poetic lyrics is on display throughout Nightstand and shines through on songs like "Something Else," where she asks, "Are you a jewel? / Am I a thief?"

Musically, Abbott adds more texture to her Tancred tunes, while still showing the influence of Liz Phair and her '90s peers on "Hot Star," "Underwear" and lead single "Reviews," among others. The chiming, melancholy "Clipping" is the best of the moodier tracks found here.

Nightstand further cements Abbott as a talented artist with an ear for hooks and an ability to innately capture specific feelings and moments in time. Tancred returns to Philadelphia this fall, opening up for The Joy Formidable at Underground Arts on November 7th.
