Bleeding Rainbow - Interrupt (Kanine)

Bleeding Rainbow - Interrupt album cover

It always makes us happy here at Y-Not Radio when one of our favorite local Philly acts gets a national spotlight shone on them. Following the release of 2013’s Yeah Right, Bleeding Rainbow got a pretty impressive spotlight from the likes of Dave Grohl, as the Fighter of Foo raved about the fuzzed-out rockers in multiple interviews as one of his new favorite bands. (And Krist Novoselic gave them props around the same time too!) Bleeding Rainbow isn’t wasting their time, having recorded the follow-up Interrupt in just two weeks and releasing it just about a year later.

On Interrupt, the band further refines their aesthetic of cranked-up, shoegaze-y rock, with the husband-and-wife duo of Sarah Everton and Rob Garcia trading off lead vocals over a bed of ‘90s guitars. The driving “Time & Place” kicks off Interrupt as a great opener, showing off the Bleeding Rainbow sound at its best, as does lead single “So You Know.” While Everton’s voice is up front for the majority of the record, Garcia takes the mic solo for the very Nirvana-indebted “Images.” The almost-instrumental “Monochrome” is another standout track, notable for the fact that lyrically it consists of Everton singing “oooh/oh oh” over and over.

Bleeding Rainbow has had a revolving door of drummers in recent years, but Robi Gonzalez of A Place To Bury Strangers was behind the kit for the recording of Interrupt and keeps the whole album moving along at a driving pace. (Ashley Arnwine is Bleeding Rainbow’s new, official drummer.)

While Interrupt may not pack quite as many hooks as Yeah Right, it’s still a great snapshot of what makes Bleeding Rainbow one of the best bands currently on the Philly scene. They just played their album release show in town over the weekend, but don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll have an opportunity to catch them again soon enough.
